This recipe collection began as a way to back up my mother's recipe collection that she has collected in a black binder since the 1950's. Maggie and I are also adding recipes that we want to keep track of, so this will become our family go to location for storing and finding our recipes

Berliner Kranz Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange rind
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons colored sugar, green
  • 1/4 cup red cinnamon candies

Directions

  1. Cream butter; add 1/2 cup sugar, orange rind, and egg; beat until light.
  2. Add flour and salt.
  3. Chill for several hours, or until firm enough to roll.
  4. Roll to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with floured, 2-inch doughnut cutter. Put on cookie sheets.
  5. Beat egg white until foamy; add 2 tablespoons sugar gradually, and beat until stiff. Brush cookies with mixture.
  6. Decorate cookies with green sugar and cinnamon candies. Bake in hot oven, 400 degrees, for 10 to 12 minutes.
  7. Remove to wire racks while hot.
