Nalbone Family Recipes

This recipe collection began as a way to back up my mother's recipe collection that she has collected in a black binder since the 1950's. Maggie and I are also adding recipes that we want to keep track of, so this will become our family go to location for storing and finding our recipes

Servings: 48
Yield: 1 1/2 pounds

Ask others to join in on the taffy pull and have some fun.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons cider vinegar

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large heavy pan.
  2. Heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves, then cook rapidly without stirring, to 265 F on a candy thermometer. (A teaspoon of syrup will form a hard ball when dropped in cold water.) Remove from heat.
  3. Pour into a large buttered platter, allow to cool until easy to handle.
  4. Butter hands generously. Pick up candy, 1/2 at a time, and pull back and forth until golden and candy holds its shape. (TIP: While working with part of the candy, place the remainder in a barely warm (@ 200 F) oven to keep it soft)
  5. Twist each half into a rope about 1 inch in diameter. Snip into 1" lengths with scissors. Let stand on waxed paper until firm.
  6. Wrap each piece in waxed paper, foil or transparent wrap, twisting each end to seal. Store in a cool dry place.
