This recipe collection began as a way to back up my mother's recipe collection that she has collected in a black binder since the 1950's. Maggie and I are also adding recipes that we want to keep track of, so this will become our family go to location for storing and finding our recipes

German Spice Cookies

Ingredients

  • Cookies
    • 2 3/4 cups flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
    • 1 teaspoon allspice
    • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1 lemon
    • 1/3 cup nuts
    • 1/3 cup candied citron
    • 1 cup honey
    • 1/4 cup shortening
    • 3/4 cup brown sugar
    • 1 egg
  • Glaze
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup water
    • 1/4 cup confectioner's sugar

Directions

  1. Cookies:
    1. Sift flour; measure. Sift again with soda, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg. Grate lemon rind. Squeeze juice.
    2. Chop nuts into small pieces; cut citron fine.
    3. Mix honey and shortening; beat until creamy. Beat in sugar, egg, lemon rind and juice. Stir in dry ingredients, nuts, and citron. Chill over night.
    4. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F or hot. Roll out small amount dough at a time to 1/8" thickness on lightly floured board. Cut into rectangles 1 1/2" x 2 1/2". Bake 1" apart on greased baking sheet for 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately brush with glaze. Decorate with candied cherries and citron. Cool.
  2. Glaze:
    1. Boil together 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water to ???F on candy thermometer. Remove from heat; stir in 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar.
